I’m involved in another head on

No Mum, it’s OK. It’s not a nasty traffic accident, but the prize for photographic portraiture. Having been selected as a finalist in ‘09 I was chuffed to learn that an image of mine has been chosen as part of the 2010 Head On Portrait Prize exhibition of 40 prints.
Formerly a stand alone show, Head [...]

Sydney Festival 2010 week 2 in pictures

Another week in January, another stellar collection of offerings from the Sydney Festival program. Personal highlights included The Books’ clever, funny blend of music, found recordings and video, watching Peter Sellars inspire his 93-strong cast at the Symphony of Psalms rehearsal in Marrickville Town Hall, Lynette Wallworth’s powerful humanistic works, the stage presence of Six Characters [...]

sculptures are going, going…

time sure does fly. you only have a few days left to see this year’s sculpture by the sea at bondi, and if crowds aren’t your thing, take my advice and don’t leave it until the weekend - so that means today or tomorrow people!

here’s a glimpse of what’s on show. another great offering from [...]

He shoots sculptures by the sea shore

On the eve of the opening of the 13th annual Sculpture By The Sea (SXS) exhibition, which sees over 100 pieces installed along the clifftop walk from the south end of Sydney’s Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach (or “Glamarama” as its known to some), I thought I’d share some of my images from the last three years as an [...]

Needles of a different kind put to use in Kings Cross

On Saturdays during the last couple of months, dozens of folk got together in Kings Cross, Sydney’s “colourful” suburb known for its strip clubs, crooked cops and illicit drug trade, to take part in a needle program with a difference.
“I Heart Kings Cross”, part of the City of Sydney’s 2009 Art and About festival, is an initiative of Sydney [...]

laneways are launched

Last Thursday saw the launch of the City of Sydney’s 2009 Art and About festival and the Laneways By George! Hidden Networks Temporary Art programme - see my last post for more info. The suit-wearing end of town never looked so good, so go and explore it for yourself.

laneways by george!

Today I got a sneak peek at the City of Sydney’s “Laneways By George! Hidden Networks” art programme, part of the larger “Art and About” arts festival that is officially launched this Thursday, October 1.
Laneways By George! sees eight artists transform some of the CBD’s narrowest, darkest alleys into outdoor interactive, creative spaces, each interpreting the ideas of art, architecture and the urban [...]

A Sydney institution is in strife

How terribly sad it is that the very venue I mentioned in my last post about the early days of the band Wolfmother is now closed, indefinitely. If the Hopetoun Hotel’s doors were to remain so it would be a very sad day for Sydney’s, indeed Australia’s, musical community.

Some great Australian and international bands have graced her small but perfectly formed [...]

Prototype in the public domain

With Chantal Kirby and Susan Dimasi at the helm, Melbourne-based fashion label MATERIALBYPRODUCT have quietly gone about creating award-winning collections “designing appropriate fashion for our culture, our time and our place (globally)”.
The label’s philosophy is informed by sustainability as much as it is by traditional fashion design. In keeping with this down-to-earth “eco-couture” aesthetic, they, and i quote them directly, “continue [...]
